9/5/21 - Motivic Development

Create a four beat rhythmic motif. Develop the motif using the following processes: retrograde (backwards), augmentation (proportionally elongating the note values), diminution (proportionally shortening the note values), and fragmentation (using portions of the rhythmic motifs). Compose 16-measures for a non-pitched instrument using only the rhythms from your motif, retrograde, augmentation, diminution, and fragmentation.

  1. Motive of Composition - A fun short snare excerpt where the augmentation is embedded in a 16th. note passage with the rim clicks outlining the augmented motive. I also put some interesting textures in here such as playing on the snare stand, rim shots, and stick clicks. Since I'm very happy with one, I'll include the audio in case you'd like to hear it.

    1. Nice work, Seth. The triplet and sixteenth note groupings worked really well during throughout to build unity. I especially liked them during the fragmentation portion.

9/1/21 - Timbre

Compose an 8-measure duet for two of the same instruments (two trumpets for example). Focus on creating a moment where there are two distinct, contrasting parts using range, dynamics, and articulations to emphasize the difference and a moment where the two instruments blend into one another.
