9/22/21 - Text Setting

Compose a melody for voice that uses the following text: O well for him who lives at ease  With garnered gold in wide domain,  Nor heeds the splashing of the rain,  The crashing down of forest trees. -  O well for him who ne'er hath known  The travail of the hungry years,  A father grey with grief and tears,  A mother weeping all alone. -  But well for him whose feet hath trod  The weary road of toil and strife, Yet from the sorrows of his life  Builds ladders to be nearer God. from “A Lament” by Oscar Wilde

9/18/21 - Text Setting

Compose a melody for voice that uses the following text: This is my letter to the World That never wrote to Me– The simple News that Nature told– With tender Majesty Her Message is committed         To Hands I cannot see– For love of Her– Sweet– countrymen– Judge tenderly– of Me from “This is my letter to the World” - Emily Dickinson (1862)

9/12/21 - Motivic Development

Create a four beat motif that uses both rhythm and pitches. Develop the motif using the following processes: transposition (moving the motif to different starting pitches), inversion (taking pitches down instead of up and vice versa), retrograde (backwards), augmentation (proportionally elongating the note values), diminution (proportionally shortening the note values), and fragmentation (using portions of the motifs). Compose 12-measures for a single line instrument using your motif, transpositions, inversion, retrograde, augmentation, diminution, and fragmentation.

9/8/21 - Timbre

Compose an 8-measure duet for two instruments of the same family (alto saxophone and tenor saxophone or violin and cello for example). Aim to create moments where the timbres blend and moments where the unique instrument timbres are very distinct.

9/5/21 - Motivic Development

Create a four beat rhythmic motif. Develop the motif using the following processes: retrograde (backwards), augmentation (proportionally elongating the note values), diminution (proportionally shortening the note values), and fragmentation (using portions of the rhythmic motifs). Compose 16-measures for a non-pitched instrument using only the rhythms from your motif, retrograde, augmentation, diminution, and fragmentation.

9/1/21 - Timbre

Compose an 8-measure duet for two of the same instruments (two trumpets for example). Focus on creating a moment where there are two distinct, contrasting parts using range, dynamics, and articulations to emphasize the difference and a moment where the two instruments blend into one another.
